Short answer: "Free receipt scanner" almost always means free scanning into the app's own dashboard. The step you actually want, a row appearing in your Google Sheet, is where the paywall sits at nearly every app: it's a paid tier, a Zapier automation you pay for separately, or a CSV you import by hand. As of September 2026, ReceiptToSheet's free plan is the one I know of that includes native Google Sheets sync at $0: 20 scans a month, no card. I built it, so read the rest of this with that in mind.

The honest version of this post is short, so I'll keep it short.

What "Free" Usually Means in This Category

Receipt apps have a structural reason to keep the free tier inside their own walls. Scanning is cheap for them. What they're selling is the dashboard, the reports, the categories, the history: the things that make leaving painful. So the free plan lets you scan, and then the data sits in their app.

Getting the data out, into a spreadsheet you control, is the part that costs money. Sometimes it's a paid tier. Sometimes it's a Zapier connection that's technically free to wire up but paid to run at any real volume. Sometimes it's a CSV export, which is free and also a chore you'll do twice and then stop doing.

None of that is a scam. It's just that "free receipt scanner" and "free receipt scanner for Google Sheets" are different searches with different answers, and most apps only qualify for the first one.

The Free Tiers, App by App

All pricing below is from a screenshot audit of each app's own pricing page. Where a number isn't in that audit, i've left it out rather than guess. Check the app's page before deciding; these change.

ReceiptToSheet

Free plan: 20 scans a month, Google Sheets sync included (column mapping and tab selection too), CSV export, no credit card. What's not free: unlimited scans, viewing and downloading receipt images after the review step, and the in-app history view. Those are Pro at $15 a month, or $12 a month billed annually. The catch, honestly: 20 a month is a household or a light-volume freelancer. If you scan more than that, you'll hit the wall and it will ask you to upgrade. Sheets sync itself never gets paywalled.

This is the one I built, and the free-with-Sheets decision was deliberate. The Sheet is the product; charging for the connection to it never made sense to me.

SparkReceipt

Free plan: yes, there is one. What's not free: the higher volume tiers, and there's no native Sheets sync at any price. Getting data to a Sheet means a Zapier automation on top, which is its own monthly bill once you're past Zapier's free task limit. Best for: people who want a solid scanning app and are fine living in its dashboard.

Foreceipt

Free plan: 100 receipts a month with 12 months of retention, which is the most generous scan count on this list. What's not free: Google Sheets. Foreceipt's Google integration syncs receipt images to Drive, not rows to Sheets. A Drive folder of JPEGs is storage, not data. Best for: high-volume scanning where a spreadsheet isn't the destination.

ReceiptSync

Free plan: a small allowance, 10 scans a month when I last checked. What's not free: everything past that. Unlimited scans with native Sheets sync is $9.99 a month, which is cheaper than our Pro tier and a fair thing to say out loud. Native iOS and Android apps rather than a PWA. Best for: someone who already knows they'll scan more than 20 a month and wants the cheapest unlimited plan with real Sheets sync.

Sheetify

Free plan: none. What it is: a Google Sheets sidebar add-on, so it's Sheets-native by construction, at $9.99 a month. Desktop-first. Best for: people who scan at a desk, not at the register.

Shoeboxed, Hubdoc, Dext, WellyBox

Shoeboxed's free tier is 5 digital receipts a month. Hubdoc, Dext, and WellyBox have no free plan (Hubdoc has a trial). None of the four writes to Google Sheets natively; WellyBox syncs to Google Drive, which is a different product. These are bookkeeper and finance-team tools, and their pricing reflects that.

Who Should Stay on a Free Plan

If you're a household tracking groceries and the odd big purchase, or a freelancer with a handful of expenses a month, a free plan with real Sheets sync is the whole product. There's nothing in a paid tier you need. Twenty receipts a month covers my wife and me in a normal month, and that's the number the free plan was sized to.

If you're a contractor, a gig driver, or anyone whose receipt pile is a weekly thing rather than a monthly thing, you'll outgrow 20 fast, and then the honest comparison is ReceiptToSheet Pro at $15 against ReceiptSync at $9.99. We're more expensive. What you get for the difference is a PWA that runs in any phone browser with nothing to install, Schedule C tax mode that sets the deduction line at capture, receipt image storage you can pull up from history, and a review step before anything commits to your Sheet. Whether that's worth $5 a month is your call, and I'd rather you make it with the numbers in front of you than find out after signing up.
