Costco Receipt Lookup: How to Find a Lost Receipt (And Never Lose One Again)
Last updated: April 2026
I shop at the Costco in Tsuen Wan. Thermal receipt as long as my forearm. Last month I lost one between the trolley and the parking shuttle and only noticed when my wife pinged me about a HK$200 line item she didn't recognize on our shared sheet. By then the receipt was probably under a bus.
If you're reading this, you're somewhere in the same loop — return window closing, expense report due, or a partner asking what the charge was for. Skip to the answer:
Fastest path: open the Costco app, tap Warehouse → Purchase History. If your card was scanned at checkout, it's there. The rest of this post covers the cases where it isn't.
Method 1: Look Up Your Receipt in the Costco App
The fastest option for in-warehouse purchases is the Costco app.
- Open the Costco app and sign in with your membership account
- Tap Warehouse at the bottom of the screen, then select Purchase History
- This requires that your membership card was scanned at checkout — which it typically is if you paid by credit card or used your digital card
Purchase History shows recent in-store transactions for most members and lets you view or share individual receipts. Availability varies by region and membership level, so don't panic if a transaction takes a beat to appear.
For online orders, tap Account and then Order History instead. Your Costco.com orders are tracked separately from warehouse purchases.
Method 2: Look Up Online at Costco.com
If you prefer a desktop browser or can't find what you need in the app:
- Go to costco.com and sign in to your account
- Navigate to My Account → Order History for online purchases
- For in-store purchases, the web account mirrors the app's Purchase History — look under your account for warehouse transaction history
The web view is better for printing or saving a PDF for an expense report. Same lookback as the app.
Method 3: Customer Service Desk Lookup
If the app and the website both come up empty — or the purchase is older — go to the membership desk at any Costco warehouse.
I've actually done this. They asked for my membership card and the rough date. Two minutes later they printed a duplicate. No drama.
This also covers the case where the cashier didn't scan your card at checkout, which happens more at self-checkout than people realize.
For returns specifically, Costco's return policy is generous — they look up most purchases by membership card without a receipt at all. If the goal is a return and not bookkeeping, you can often skip the lookup entirely and just bring the item.
What If the Receipt Is More Than 2 Years Old?
Costco's purchase history through the app and website generally goes back about two years. Beyond that, digital records may not be retrievable through self-serve channels.
For older transactions:
- Your bank or credit card statement — won't have line items, but it proves the date and amount
- Executive Member Annual Reward summary — if you're an Executive member, the annual statement reflects a percentage of your spending and works as a rough yearly total
- Contact Costco member services — for unusual cases, they sometimes have additional options
For most expense reporting, a card statement is acceptable when the receipt itself is gone. Check with your accountant if you're not sure.
Using Costco Receipts for Business Expense Tracking
If you're self-employed, Costco shows up constantly in deductible categories — office supplies, equipment, food for client meetings, cleaning supplies. The receipt is long, the business line items are scattered between household stuff, and pulling them out at tax time is the worst kind of busywork.
Most people pick the worst of two options: keep the paper and transcribe it later (you won't), or look it up in the app weeks after the fact (the categorization is gone from your head by then). Both lose information.
How to Never Lose a Costco Receipt Again
Looking up a receipt is a tax you pay for not having logged it in the first place. The fix is to capture it once, at the warehouse, before it leaves your hand.
That's what I built ReceiptToSheet for. It's a mobile web app — no install — that takes a photo of a receipt and pushes the merchant, date, total, and category into a row in your own Google Sheet. You confirm the row before it commits.
Honest disclosure: Costco thermal receipts are one of the harder targets in OCR. They're long, narrow, dense with item lines, and the print fades fast — especially the ones that have been folded in a pocket overnight. ReceiptToSheet runs a tiered escalation pipeline (cheap model first, smarter models on the receipts that fail) precisely because of receipts like these. Across roughly $18.88 of total Gemini spend so far, the worst offenders in the dataset are crumpled thermal Costco-style receipts in low light. Knowing that, the app retries before giving up — but if the receipt is unreadable, you'll see exactly what failed and can correct it.
Setup is about two minutes: sign in with Google, paste your Sheet URL, map the columns to whatever layout you already use.
The free tier is 20 scans per month. Pro is $15/month for 200 scans with full Google Sheets sync — comfortable for most freelancers and small businesses.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far back can Costco look up receipts?
Costco generally keeps purchase history accessible for about two years through the app and website. For older records, the membership desk may help, but it isn't guaranteed. Credit card statements are the reliable fallback.
Can I get a receipt for a Costco.com order?
Yes. Costco.com orders live in your online account under Order History. Sign in at costco.com and go to My Account → Order History to view, print, or download any order with full purchase details.
Does Costco accept digital receipts for returns?
Costco's return policy doesn't strictly require a receipt — they can look most purchases up by membership card. A screenshot from the app works too. In practice, the membership number is usually enough.
How do I track Costco business expenses efficiently?
Log receipts at the point of purchase, not later. A Google Sheets tracker handles most small businesses — set the columns once (date, merchant, amount, category, notes) and use a scanning app to fill in rows automatically. ReceiptToSheet does exactly this: photograph the receipt, confirm the data, and the row lands in your Sheet.
Bottom Line
Lost a Costco receipt? App's Purchase History first. Membership desk for older transactions or anything that wasn't tied to your card. Costco.com Order History for online stuff.
If you're at Costco regularly and writing off the business portion, scan it in the parking lot before you drive home. Future-you will thank present-you at tax time.
